An elevated deck gives you a built-in roof for a usable space underneath. Instead of letting the bare ground go unused, make a few modifications to the area for a second outdoor entertainment and living space. If you don't want additional entertaining space, use the area under the deck as an extra storage zone for outdoor gear such as gardening tools and outdoor toys. Decide the use for the space beforehand so you are able to plan out the outdoor renovation.
Install a deck drainage system to the underside of the deck. The system attaches to the joists to channel any water or moisture from above so it doesn't fall down onto the space underneath the deck. Kits are available at home improvement stores.
Clean out the space underneath the deck. Remove any items in the area such as things you've been storing there or large rocks.
Measure out the area that you want to finish. For a simple renovation, use the corner posts coming down from the deck to mark the corners of the lower area.
Remove the grass and weeds from the area to create a base for the usable space. Level the area with a slight slope away from the house to encourage water to run away from the foundation. Add soil as needed and then compact it to level out the space.
Pour a concrete pad in the space under the deck. If you have a large area, hiring a professional is often easier and faster than mixing and pouring the concrete yourself. An alternative is to lay a paver patio under the deck.
Add furniture or storage units underneath the deck, depending on how you plan to use the space.
