How to Replace Outside Pool Surrounds

Replacing the surrounding tiles or area of a pool will give the pool area new life. After years of sun and chlorine exposure, the area around a pool will fade and often crack. This leaves the pool looking old and worn and presents possible areas of water buildup. Even small cracks may grow over time if not replaced. When planning to replace a pool surround, carefully consider the new materials.

Things You'll Need

  • Hammer
  • Chisel
  • 2-inch by 4-inch wood forms
  • Wood stakes
  • Measuring tape
  • Concrete mix
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Shovel
  • Trowel
  • Concrete stamps (optional)
  • Tile (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Remove old tile or concrete. Begin working at the edge of the pool using a chisel and hammer. Be sure to not break the wall of the pool. Work around the edge of the pool then outwards. Use a shovel to lift and break larger pieces from the outside edge of the surround. Haul away the concrete with a wheelbarrow and dispose of properly.

    • 2

Frame 4-foot sections around the pool. Start at one end of the pool and measure a 4-foot section. Place a 2-inch by 4-inch by 2-foot board straight out from the area and secure it in place with wooden stakes. Put a stake on each side of the boards at each end. Complete a square by placing a 2-inch by 4-inch by 4-foot board across the back and securing it with wooden stakes. You will have a 4-foot square.

    • 3

Mix concrete according to the manufacturer's directions, and pour it into the framed square. Pour to the edge of the pool. Be careful to not over-fill.

    • 4

Smooth the concrete with a trowel. Level the concrete to the edge of the pool. Allow it to dry for at least eight hours.

    • 5

Repeat framing and pouring around the pool. Fill in the edges between the sections by troweling over the wet concrete.

    • 6

Add concrete stamps or tile over the concrete for decoration.
