How to Remove Mildew From Patios Near Plants

Mildew is not just unsightly, it’s also slippery. On a patio, this can create a dangerous situation, especially when it’s wet. Whether your patio is made from concrete, brick or wood, sweep away debris and remove chipping paint before attacking the mildew. If plants are growing nearby, use one of several methods that are effective at removing mildew from most patio surfaces and are safe for your plants.

Things You'll Need

  • Power washer
  • Eco-friendly cleaner
  • Deck brush or bristle brush
  • Chlorine bleach
  • Garden hose

Instructions

Pressure wash the mildew off of the patio. Use a wide tip, starting with the lowest pressure setting and holding the wand so the tip is approximately 18 inches from the surface. Practice using the power washer in an inconspicuous area until you get used to it. Then power wash the rest of the patio with plain water to remove the mildew.

Purchase an eco-friendly deck cleaner appropriate for your patio material. Clean per label instructions, scrubbing it into the surface with a deck or bristle brush to remove the mildew. Rinse the surface with your hose and repeat if the mildew is still present. You can also power wash the surface with water after cleaning to remove any lingering dirt and mildew.

Water the plants with 1/2 to 1 inch of water the day before cleaning your patio with chlorine bleach. Then clean the surface with a bleach solution made with 1 cup of bleach for every 1 gallon of water. Scrub the bleach solution into the patio with a deck or bristle brush. Rinse the area clean with a hose, pointing it away from the nearby plants. Water the plants afterward with 1 inch of water to flush any bleach deep into the soil, away from the roots.
