How to Get a Stain Out of a Chair

Keeping upholstery looking new and pristine involves removing stains as soon as you notice them. Letting a stain soak into an upholstered chair is particularly troublesome, as the stain can soak into the padding where it is impossible to completely remove. If the stain is damp, it can cause mildew and mold to develop. Prevent this by removing stains as soon as possible. Always check with your upholstery manufacturer to determine the best cleaning options for your chair. Test the cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area first to make sure it won't damage the upholstery.

Instructions

    • 1

Blot up as much of the stain as possible with a cloth. Work from the edges of the stain toward the center, and blot rather than rub to prevent the stain from spreading.

    • 2

Make a dish detergent solution by pouring 1 tbsp. liquid dish soap and 2 cups warm water into a bowl. Use liquid dish soap that doesn't contain bleach or dyes. Mix until the water is sudsy. Use the solution to remove food, grease, wine, coffee or blood stains.

    • 3

Make an ammonia solution by pouring 1 tbsp. ammonia into a bowl with 1 cup water. Mix the solution completely. Blot the solution onto grease, soap, vomit, or acidic food stains.

    • 4

Use rubbing alcohol to remove stains by soaking a cloth in the alcohol. Wring out the cloth as much as possible so it is just damp. Use the rubbing alcohol to remove ink or paint stains.

    • 5

Blot the appropriate stain cleaning solution directly onto the stain, working from the edges toward the center. Blot with a white cloth so you can see the stain transfer from the chair to the cloth. Be careful not to completely soak the chair, as this could damage the upholstery and padding.

    • 6

Blot the area with a damp cloth to rinse away the cleaning solution residue.

    • 7

Press a dry cloth over the area to remove the moisture and dry the chair. Let the chair air-dry completely.
