How to Bleach a Yellowed Cotton Bedspread

Perspiring while sleeping, a natural occurrence that stains your bedding with unsightly yellow stains, is easily removable with common household products and oxygen bleach. Laundry detergents that are not formulated with oxygen bleach won't effectively remove the stains, as the perspiration stain must be broken up with a specific cleaning agent. As with any cleaning product, check your bedspread's cleaning tag to ensure it can be cleaned with bleach.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the stained area of the bedspread in a clean bucket or large bowl. Pour 2 cups of white vinegar directly on the stain.

    • 2

Rub the stain with your fingers to saturate the stain, then apply a prewash stain-removing spray.

    • 3

Leave the spray on the stain for five minutes to set. Fill the washer with the hottest temperature specified on the bedspread's cleaning tag.

    • 4

Add 1 cup of laundry detergent to the washer's water. Add the recommended amount of oxygen bleach specified on the bleach's label.

    • 5

Place the bedspread in the washer and wash it on a normal wash cycle.

    • 6

Tumble-dry the bedspread according to the cleaning tag.
