Household Solution for Removing Pet Odors

Pets can be loving companions, but they can have drawbacks, including unappealing scents, especially during house- or litter-training. While you can purchase commercial pet urine cleaners, which typically contain enzymes, you can also use a homemade solution to clean pet odors.
  1. Baking Soda

    • For lingering pet odors, sprinkle baking soda in the area. If necessary, apply it to carpet covering the entire room. Rub it into the carpet, allowing it to penetrate in the fibers and sprinkle another layer on top. Allow it to sit for 24 hours, then vacuum it up. A paste made out of baking soda and water is effective for deeper stains or small, concentrated areas.

    Vinegar

    • Vinegar is a natural way to remove strong odors, especially those created by urine from house training or spraying. Pour vinegar inside a spray bottle, then spray the entire area where the urine is until it's soaked. Wipe it up after it penetrates the carpet. You might have a vinegar odor for a day or two but it will disappear and should completely lift the urine smell out of the carpet fibers. If you're concerned about carpet discoloration, try it in a small area first.

    Corn Starch

    • Sprinkle corn starch in an area with a strong odor to lift it from the carpet fibers. Use a brush to rub it in, then vacuum it up. For stronger odors or ones that have been there for awhile, pour a very thick layer of cornstarch on the spot, then rub it into the area deeply. You can also let it sit if you feel the scent is too strong.

    Peroxide and Dish Detergent

    • Mix a teaspoon of dish detergent in with 2/3 cup peroxide. Be careful about using peroxide on carpet, specifically darker colors. Always do a spot test in a hidden, tiny area. Use a cloth to rub the mixture into the carpet, then add water and blot up with a towel.
