How to Get a Stain From a Vinyl Tile

Vinyl tile in the bathroom, kitchen or on the floor adds low-maintenance care and durability to your room. When you care for your vinyl tiles properly, they can last for years to come. Stains from food, beverages, bathroom products and dirt are par for the course in a high-traffic area. To avoid a buildup of stains, you must clean the vinyl with the right cleaning supplies and methods in a timely manner.

Instructions

  1. Oil-Based Stains

    • 1

Sprinkle cornstarch over an oil-based stain on your vinyl tile. Leave the cornstarch in place for 10 minutes to absorb the grease.

    • 2
Use paper towels to clean spills as they occur.

Brush the cornstarch off the vinyl tile with a damp paper towel.

    • 3

Fill a bucket with 1 gallon of warm water. Add 1 cup of white vinegar.

    • 4

Wet a floor mop or clean cloth in the diluted vinegar solution. Squeeze out excess moisture.

    • 5

Mop or wipe off the vinyl tile to remove any remaining greasy residue.

    • 6

Dry the tiles with another cloth.

    Food and Beverage Stains

    • 7

Wipe the food or beverage substance off the vinyl surface with paper towels.

    • 8
Vinegar effectively removes stains from vinyl.

Wash the surface with the diluted vinegar mixture made with 1 cup of white vinegar and 1 gallon of warm water.

    • 9

Sprinkle baking soda onto the cloth dampened with the vinegar solution to treat tough stains or discolored areas. Rub the vinyl with the mild abrasive to remove the stain.

    • 10

Rinse the vinyl by wiping it off with a clean cloth or, for vinyl floors, a damp floor mop. Dry the surface with a clean, dry cloth.
