How to Bring Back the Shine on Old Dirty Terrazzo Floors

Terrazzo floors are basically marble or glass chips embedded in cement. The terrazzo is then sealed and polished to a lustrous shine. Even though this type of flooring is quite durable, it needs regular care to retain its beauty. Older floors that have been neglected and become soiled look dull and discolored. Fortunately, you can restore their shine with products designed for use on terrazzo floors.

Instructions

    • 1

Clear the floor of furniture, plants and all other objects. Sweep or dust the floor to remove all dirt, dust and debris. Put on gloves and protective eyewear.

    • 2

Use a stripper to remove the wax coating on the floor. Dilute the stripper in a bucket of water and apply it with a clean mop. Set a timer for desired time the stripper needs to set. Discard the diluted wax stripper and rinse the bucket well.

    • 3

Fill the bucket with clean tap water. Dip another mop into the water and wring it out. Mop up the dissolved wax and the stripper solution. Rinse the mop out often. Change the water often too. Rinse the terrazzo floor well. Allow it to dry before you proceed.

    • 4

Apply one or two thin coats of a terrazzo sealer onto the floor with a manufacturer-recommended applicator. The sealer will help protect from stains and dirt being ground in. It will also provide a bright finish. Allow the floor to dry completely.

    • 5

Use an electric floor buffer to polish and shine the floor.
