How to Get Mold Off of a Marble Headstone

Headstones are not only monuments to those who have passed on but also valuable historical markers that allow historians and family members a glimpse of those who have come before them. Marble headstones are beautiful, but marble, like limestone and sandstone, is a soft stone, making it susceptible to harsh chemical treatments and sharp tools. Removing mold from marble headstones is important to not only keep them looking beautiful but to preserve them against the ravages of time. The best way to extend the life of a marble headstone is to keep it clean.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove large build-ups of mold using a plastic spatula or craft stick. Do not use a knife or other metal utensil, or you will cause scratches.

    • 2

Wipe the headstone with a damp cloth to remove loose mold. Choose a soft cloth and avoid coarse or abrasive materials.

    • 3

Use water and a soft-bristled brush to lightly scrub the headstone. Rinse the headstone often as you clean to prevent brushing the mold into cracks.

    • 4

Use a non-ionic soap or detergent only if absolutely necessary. Non-ionic soaps and detergents are available at janitorial stores, conservation stores, photography supply stores and some livestock supply stores. Mix the non-ionic soap or detergent according to the directions that come with it and use the mixture as you used water in Step 3.

    • 5

Apply a sealant only if mold is an extreme issue. Special marble sealants are available from headstone suppliers. Sealant should only be used as a last resort.
