How to Clean Aluminum Stains

Aluminum is used in everything from soda pop cans to cookware to boat hulls. Compared to other metals like stainless steel and iron, aluminum is soft, malleable and low maintenance. Over time, aluminum surfaces can accumulate hard-water residue, rust stains and other stubborn grime. As most metal stains simply sit on the surface, they can be removed with an acidic cleaning agent and an abrasive tool. Clean and brighten your aluminum collection using household materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a small bowl halfway full with white vinegar. Add 3 to 4 tsp. of cream of tarter to the bowl and mix until dissolved.

    • 2

Dip the abrasive side of your sponge into the mixture until it is well saturated. Scrub the stained area of the aluminum using a rapid circular motion.

    • 3

Continue scrubbing until the stains begin to disappear and the underlying aluminum begins to shine through.

    • 4

Rinse the aluminum under a cool running faucet or with a garden hose.

    • 5

Dry the aluminum completely with a soft towel. Avoid future stains by cleaning the aluminum monthly.
