How to Get Gasoline Out of Jeans

In additional to producing a foul smell, spilled gasoline can create an oily stain on your favorite pair of jeans. Spills can happen at the gas station, in your garage or when you're trying to pour that spare can of gasoline into your car. Gasoline is an oil-based product and, as such, can normally be removed with methods used to remove other oil-based stains. Chances are, if you are quick enough, your favorite pair of jeans can be salvaged.

Instructions

  1. Basic Procedure

    • 1

Sprinkle baking soda on the gasoline stain to soak up any excess gasoline. Let the baking soda sit for about 30 minutes.

    • 2

Shake off the excess baking soda.

    • 3

Dampen the stain using a wet sponge.

    • 4

Treat the stain with a prewash stain remover. Follow the directions that come with the stain remover.

    • 5

Run the jeans through the washing machine on the setting required by the label. Wash the jeans by themselves.

    Stubborn Stains

    • 6

Mix 1/2 cup of liquid dish washing detergent (the kind you use for hand washing), 1 cup of white vinegar and 2 gallons of warm water in a bathtub or plastic tub.

    • 7

Add your jeans and stir until they are soaked in the solution. Let them sit in the solution for about 30 minutes.

    • 8

Remove the jeans from the solution and wring out the liquid.

    • 9

Rinse the jeans to remove any excess solution and wring again.

    • 10

Run the jeans through the washing machine by themselves.
