How to Reduce the Appearance of Scuff Marks on Leather

Keeping your leather clean and pristine includes removing scuff marks. Scuffs generally occur on leather shoes, but leather furniture can also be scuffed. Don’t use liquid-based cleaning solutions on unfinished leather such as suede and nubuck, because you will only make the scuff mark more visible.

Instructions

  1. Finished Leather

    • 1

Rub a terry cloth towel over the scuff mark until it is gone. Terry cloth has a rough nap that can work away or lighten new scuff marks.

    • 2

Rub a gum eraser over the scuff mark. Don’t use a pink eraser, because it can impart its color on the leather.

    • 3

Blot rubbing alcohol directly on the scuff mark with a cotton swab.

    • 4

Wipe the area with a cloth to remove any rubbing alcohol residue.

    Unfinished Leather

    • 5

Rub a terry cloth over the unfinished leather to work away the scuff mark. The raised nap might work well enough to hide the scuff mark.

    • 6

Rub a gum eraser over the scuff mark until it is gone, or until it is as light as possible.

    • 7

Rub a piece of superfine sandpaper gently over the scuffed area. This will actually remove the top layer of leather along with the scuff mark.

    • 8

Brush the unfinished leather with a suede brush to restore the nap.
