How to Remove Stains on a Granite Countertop With Acetone Poultice

When granite absorbs grease or oils, a stain remains behind on the surface. Granite often absorbs stains due to its porous composition. Stains can occur on sealed or unsealed granite, and the stubborn stains can become difficult to remove. A poultice made with whiting powder and acetone can draw out the stain, restoring the granite to its original condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Dampen the stain with a wet washcloth. Blot the area with the washcloth carefully to prevent spreading the stain.

    • 2

Combine an equal amount of the whiting powder and acetone to create a thick paste. Spread the paste over the stain with a plastic scraper. A 1/4- to 1/2-inch-thick application works best

    • 3

Tape clear plastic wrap over the poultice to help the area dry. Let the paste sit for 24 to 48 hours, depending on the severity of the stain. Allow the poultice to dry completely before you remove the plastic wrap.

    • 4

Rinse the granite area with clean water. Dry the surface with a soft washcloth.

    • 5

Apply the stain removal poultice again until you draw the stain out of the granite.
