Natural Ways to Remove Stubborn Mildew in the Shower

Mildew, a fungus that typically grows with mold, thrives in moist environments. It can appear in shades of pink, black or brown. Unsightly mold and mildew emit a foul odor and can exacerbate allergies and cause respiratory problems. Mildew frequently grows in bathrooms, where it can sprout in the tile grout, around and in the shower, and on the shower curtain.
  1. Vinegar

    • Mix a solution of equal parts vinegar and water. Pour the mixture on the mildew and allow it to sit for about five minutes, then wipe it away. You should notice an immediate difference as the mildew lifts. You may need to use some elbow grease to scrub away the mildew. An old toothbrush allows you to get the hard to reach places like the grout lines or in and around corners.

    Baking Soda

    • Tougher mildew requires a bit more effort. Form a paste of baking soda and water by mixing 1/2 cup of baking soda with gallon of water. Spread the paste over the mildewed areas. Let it sit for a minute or two, then scrub it vigorously with a sponge. Rinse the area thoroughly with water. If you have set-in mildew, sprinkle baking soda straight on the mildew and let it sit for an hour to penetrate the mildew before you scrub.

    Caulking

    • To clean mildew off caulking, spray straight vinegar on it, then use a flat screwdriver to scrape any dirt, soap scum and mildew from the surface.

    Prevention

    • You can take steps to prevent mildew from every growing in the first place. Clean your bathroom at least once every two weeks and run the exhaust fan on during and after showering to eliminate moisture and decrease humidity quickly, which robs mildew of the opportunity to grow. You can also spray straight vinegar on areas where mildew forms and allow it to sit until it dries.
