What Cleans Mold on Driveways?

Once mold grows on driveways, it continues to spread if you don't remove it. Mold discolors a driveway and causes areas to appear dirty. Remove the mold when you notice it, so it doesn't spread to your garage or grow on the side of your home. Mold grows best in locations with high humidity, moisture and shade. Clean the mold from your driveway properly and continue to clean it regularly to prevent its return.
  1. Pressure Washer

    • A pressure washer effectively blasts away dirt, debris and mildew from your driveway. Before you use a pressure washer, sweep the driveway with a stiff-bristled broom to remove loose dirt and debris. A high-pressure and low-output pressure washer works well with commercial cleaning products to remove mildew from surfaces. Follow the manufacturer's directions on the pressure washer and apply cleaning products according to package recommendations.

    Chlorine Bleach

    • If you don't have a pressure washer, apply chlorine bleach to the driveway to remove mold and mildew. Dilute chlorine bleach because it can damage the driveway surface. Combine 1 cup of chlorine bleach with 2 gallons of warm water. Pour the bleach over the mold, scrub with a stiff brush, then rinse with water to remove loosened mold. Pour the bleach solution carefully because the runoff can damage plants and grass near the driveway. You may want to place plastic sheeting or dropcloths on each side of the driveway before using bleach.

    Vinegar

    • Distilled white vinegar removes mold and mildew without damaging the environment. Pour the white vinegar undiluted over the mildew stain and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes. You can also pour the vinegar into a garden sprayer to spray large areas of mold. After the vinegar sits, rinse the area with clean water to wash vinegar residue off the driveway.

    Dishwasher Detergent

    • Powdered dishwasher detergent removes mold and other stains from driveways. Dampen the mold area with water and sprinkle dry dish detergent onto the concrete. After the detergent sits for 10 minutes, pour a pot of boiling water over the mold area. The boiling water helps loosen the mold and dissolves the detergent. Scrub the area with a stiff brush, then rinse the driveway with clean water. If mold remains, combine 1 cup of washing soda with 1 gallon of warm water and scrub the solution onto the mold.
