How to Get Dirt Out of a White Sweater

Like sweaters of all colors, white ones inevitably will become soiled. Unfortunately, dirt is more noticeable on a white garment, and it greatly detracts from a white sweater, marring its bright, crisp appearance. Abrasive dirt particles also can penetrate a sweater and weaken its fabric fibers. Since dirt is not only aesthetically unappealing but also damaging to the garment, clean it promptly. Allowing dirt to remain on a white sweater makes it harder to clean later.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush loose dirt off of the sweater using a sweater brush. Brush gently to prevent damaging the material.

    • 2

Pour 2 ounces of enzyme presoak product into your sink, while the drain is blocked. Fill the sink with cold water, mixing the water with the presoak product.

    • 3

Immerse the sweater in the presoak solution and let it sit for 30 minutes.

    • 4

Drain out the presoak solution then rinse the sweater in clean, cool water.

    • 5

Refill the sink with cold water. Squirt 1 teaspoon of mild baby shampoo into the running water.

    • 6

Submerge the sweater in the soapy water. Swish it around a bit then let it sit for 30 minutes, to release any remaining soil.

    • 7

Drain out the water then rinse the sweater thoroughly under cool, flowing water.

    • 8

Lay the wet sweater flat on a plush bath towel. Press down on the sweater to soak up excess water. Roll up the sweater in the towel and press firmly but gently on it to absorb more water from the sweater.

    • 9

Remove the sweater from the damp towel. Spread it flat on a dry plush towel and allow it to fully air dry.
