How to Whiten Antique Plastic

When synthetic plastic was invented in 1869 by John Wesley Hyatt, its base was plant material cellulose. In 1951, polypropylene and polyethylene would be discovered, revolutionizing the world of plastic manufacturing. Regardless of which type of material your antique plastic was made from, time has a way of warping the product and yellowing white plastic. There is a simple fix that is strong enough to remove yellow build-up, without damaging the integrity of the item.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a mixture that is one part bleach and one part water. You will need enough to fill the container.

    • 2

Place the plastic item in the container, making sure the yellowed part is entirely covered in the bleach and water mixture.

    • 3

Allow the plastic item to soak in the bleach and water mixture until the yellow discoloration has disappeared. This could take up to 24 hours.

    • 4

Remove plastic item from the bleach and water mixture and rinse off with cold water.

    • 5

Clean the plastic item with a mild detergent, rinse once more with cold water, then allow to air dry completely.
