What Cleans Super Glue?

Used commonly by hobbyists, contractors and craftspeople, super glue is known for its bonding strength and quick-drying properties. Super glue is easy to apply and versatile, having uses in many applications. However, if you should spill super glue, stains and bonding can be damaging, especially if you accidentally bond your skin together. Luckily, there are household items that clean and remove super glue.
  1. Acetone

    • An ingredient in certain nail polish removers, acetone cleans super glue by breaking down and dissolving the bond. Acetone is especially effective at cleaning super glue from the skin without harm. However, acetone is not appropriate on all surfaces and fabrics, as it can cause damage and discoloration. Before using acetone to clean super glue, test a small drop in an inconspicuous area of the fabric or surface and let it set for two minutes. If the acetone does not do any damage it is OK to use for cleaning super glue.

    Detergent and Dish Soap

    • Dish soap and laundry detergents are light and gentle products that can be used to clean super glue. They are best for use on delicate surfaces or to remove remaining spots after cleaning super glue with another application. Rub super glue stains with laundry detergent and a toothbrush before putting the fabric in the washing machine and washing according to the fabric’s instructions. Repeating may be necessary. Never put fabric stained with super glue into the dryer, as this can cause the stain to set. You can also try hand scrubbing super glue stains with dish soap and a toothbrush.

    Sandpaper and Emery Boards

    • Sandpaper and emery boards have a rough surface that breaks down super glue, causing it to flake away. It is important not to rub too vigorously. While both these applications are effective for cleaning super glue, they can also cause damage to the area if you rub too hard. A pumice stone, found at your local beauty supply store, also has a rough surface that is effective for cleaning super glue.

    Razor Blades

    • On hard surfaces that are delicate and need precision in cleaning super glue spills, razor blades are effective. Use razor blades to carefully pry against the super glue that has spilled and dried, scraping it away from the surface. As the razor blade loosens the super glue, use a cloth to rub away the remaining flakes. Razor blades are best for cleaning super glue from surfaces like glass, countertops, floors and furniture finishes.

    Considerations

    • Always wait for super glue to dry before attempting to clean it, as this can create a bigger problem, as your cleaning application may bond to the surface. Do not use acetone on fabrics that indicate dry cleaning only. If you are attempting to clean super glue from delicate fabrics, consult a cleaning professional, even if the fabric indicates that it is machine washable. Consult a cleaning professional for delicate surfaces and finishes to ensure that nothing is damaged as you attempt to clean super glue. You may need a super glue solvent, available at your local craft store.
