How to Get Wax Off an Upholstered Chair

While candles add a romantic, cozy aura to home interiors, spilled candle wax is never appealing. Candle wax quickly settles onto an upholstered chair and cools down, forming a hard, waxy stain. The longer the wax remains on chair upholstery, the more embedded it becomes. Candle wax may also contain pigments that blemish upholstery with very distinct stains. Since wax stains make upholstered chairs appear dingy, you need to remove the wax as soon as possible with common household supplies.

Instructions

    • 1

Put some ice cubes in a zip-lock sandwich bag. Rub the bag of ice cubes over the upholstery until the candle wax freezes.

    • 2

Scrape off the frozen wax particles with a butter knife. Pry off as much wax as possible.

    • 3

Inspect the upholstery for any lingering wax residue or oily stains. If the upholstery is still stained, pour a dime-sized dollop of dry-cleaning solvent onto a dye-free rag.

    • 4

Dab the remaining wax residue or oily spot with the rag until the residue or spot disappears. Fold the rag over once any wax or oil transfers onto it.

    • 5

Blot the upholstery with a clean, dry rag to absorb any excess dry-cleaning solvent. Do not rinse the upholstery.
