How to Get a Red Wine Stain Out of an Oriental Rug

Nothing can ruin the classic elegance of an oriental rug faster than an unsightly red wine stain. Since rugs are meant to be lived on, the chances of an eventual red wine spill are high. Be prepared to take care of a stain as soon as possible so you can catch it before it sets permanently. Having the supplies you need to treat a red wine stain on hand will have your oriental rug looking as good as new in no time.

  Press the spot firmly with a paper towel and blot as much liquid as you can. Do not rub at the stain or you will spread it. Blotting should keep it within the parameters of the spill.

  Pour warm, but not hot, water directly onto the stain to dilute the red wine. Depending on the size of the spill, pour water slowly until you see the stain lose color.

  Blot the wet spot with paper towels until you have absorbed as much liquid as you can. Repeat the diluting and blotting until the stain is gone.

  Prop the wet portion of the rug up to allow air circulation and help it dry faster. If this is not possible, place a dry folded towel over the wet spot and put something heavy on top of that to soak up the water as it wicks up through the fibers. Replace the damp towel with a dry one as needed.
