How to Clean Baked-On Grease Off an Enamel Stove Top

Stove tops coated with enamel provide a protective surface to keep the appliance attractive. Enamel stove tops require careful cleaning because the surface scratches easily. Liquids and foods typically wipe off the enamel surface with ease, but baked-on grease usually requires more effort. When you do not wipe up spills immediately, the heat on the stove top causes the grease to become thick and hard. Treat the baked-on grease quickly to keep the stove-top surface in good shape.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove everything from the stove top, including grates, drip pans and burner covers.

    • 2

Place the removed items into a sink with warm soapy water. Let them soak while you remove the baked-on grease from the stove top.

    • 3

Wipe down the surface of the enamel stove top with warm soapy water and a nonabrasive sponge. Rinse the enamel stove-top surface with clean water.

    • 4

Remove tough baked-on grease carefully with a wooden scraper or dull butter knife. Enamel surfaces chip easily, so push on the surface gently to remove burned-on grease.

    • 5

Sprinkle baking soda onto a clean damp washcloth. Scrub the grease stains with the washcloth.

    • 6

Scrub the burners, drip pans and covers with the nonabrasive sponge. Remove stubborn stains with a baking soda paste that contains an equal amount of baking soda and water.

    • 7

Rinse and dry the stove top thoroughly.

    • 8

Rinse and dry the burners, drip pans and covers thoroughly and return to the stove top.
