How to Remove Dye From Leather Converse Shoes

Converse has been known for its rugged sneakers with simple, classic styling since it began production in 1908. Though canvas is used to make the upper part of most Converse models, leather can be found on some editions such as the Jack Purcell signature shoe. Leather is a supple, sensitive material that is easily stained by inks, dyes and paint. If you spilled a bit of clothing dye on your Converse, you'll have to act quickly to remove it.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak up as much dye as possible using a folded paper towel. Press the towel onto the leather using firm pressure to absorb the dye.

    • 2

Saturate a clean sponge with warm water and wring out the excess. Dab the stained area of the leather repetitively using firm pressure. Avoid wiping the leather as this may push the dye further into the fiber.

    • 3

Dip the tip of a cotton swab into the container of rubbing alcohol and wipe any excess with a paper towel. Roll the tip of the swab gently over the entire dye stain to lift any remaining dye away from the leather. Use fresh swabs and more rubbing alcohol as needed.

    • 4

Allow the rubbing alcohol to evaporate from the leather. Brush the area with a soft-bristled brush to restore the leather's supple texture.

    • 5

Apply a small amount of leather conditioner to the area and rub it in thoroughly. Allow it to penetrate the leather for at least 15 minutes, then wipe off the excess with a paper towel.
