How to Clean Clay from Cement

Cement is a durable building material, but it is porous and prone to stains. Because clay is moist, it's often a difficult stain to remove from concrete, brick and other building materials. Removing stains from concrete is tricky because certain chemical agents may damage or otherwise discolor the stone-like material. Careful homeowners can remove even dried, stuck-on clay stains from concrete without ruining the look of the concrete itself.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the stained area lightly with a hose. Do not use high pressure on the stain because this may drive it more deeply down into the concrete. Thoroughly wet the area. If the water does not remove the stain, continue to Step 2.

    • 2

Mix 1 cup of mild liquid soap into a bucket of warm water. Apply the mixture to the stain with a soft-bristled brush.

    • 3

Wipe at the stain with the brush gently and rinse the area with clean water. If the stain persists, add 1 cup of vinegar to the water and wash the stain a second time.

    • 4

Mix vinegar and talc together in approximately equal parts to create a paste. Spread the paste directly on the clay stain and allow it to dry for up to 12 hours.

    • 5

Brush the dried paste away from the concrete using a clean, dry soft-bristled brush. If there is improvement to the appearance of the stain, re-apply a new mixture of the paste and repeat the process. Sometimes, this method of stain removal requires multiple applications.
