How to Remove Red Wine Stains From a Silk Dining Chair

Red wine complements many dinner menus and is enjoyed year-round. When a special occasion calls for you to use the fine china and silk-upholstered dining room chairs, a wine spill can be a minor disaster. Instructions

    • 1

Pour cornstarch over the red wine stain while it's fresh to absorb the liquid. Let the cornstarch remain on the silk chair for 20 minutes.

    • 2

Vacuum the cornstarch from the silk chair surface with a hand-held vacuum.

    • 3
Vinegar helps remove wine stains and the fermented odor.

Empty 1 tbsp. of white vinegar into a bowl. Add 2/3 cup of rubbing alcohol.

    • 4

Dampen a sponge with the alcohol and vinegar solution. Wring out excess moisture so the sponge is barely damp.

    • 5

Blot the remaining red wine stain with the sponge. Rinse the sponge as the wine stain is lifted. Apply more rubbing alcohol solution and continue to blot away as much of the stain as possible.

    • 6

Press dry cloths into the silk to absorb moisture. Treat any remaining wine stain by dabbing it with a solution made from 1 tbsp. of dishwashing detergent mixed with 2 cups of warm water.

    • 7

Rinse the silk by blotting it with a damp cloth. Press a dry cloth into the silk to absorb excess moisture.

Use a hairdryer to avoid water stains on silk.

Hold a hairdryer about 12 inches away from the silk and turn it to the "Low" heat setting. Move the dryer back and forth over the silk chair to quickly dry the fabric.
