How to Get Paint Out of a Quilt

Paint on fabric, especially decorative soft surface items such as quilts, is challenging to handle. Removing paint from quilts, whether splatters or large spills, involves time and an attention to detail. Working quickly and thoroughly to get the stain removed is key to ensure the quilt is not ruined.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape off dry paint using your fingernail or the dull side of a butter knife. Do not apply a lot of pressure to help prevent tearing or ripping the quilt.

    • 2

Hold the portion of the quilt with the paint over a a laundry tub or sink. Run a strong stream of lukewarm tap water directly over top of the stain to flush out some of the paint. Continue running a strong stream of water until the water runs clear.

    • 3

Move the quilt to a flat surface. Mix one part of dish washing detergent or gentle laundry detergent with one part lukewarm water. Mix the cleaning solution together. Use a sponge soaked in the cleaning solution and dab the paint stain. Do not rub the stain as this may spread the paint stain. Run a strong stream of warm water over the stain again to flush out the cleaning solution.

    • 4

Soak a cotton ball or piece of clean cloth in white vinegar. Tap the vinegar repeatedly over the stain. Change cotton balls as needed, once paint has transferred onto the cotton ball. Repeat the process until the vinegar-soaked cotton no longer removes paint.

    • 5

Put rubbing alcohol or acetone onto a cotton ball. Tap the acetone over the remaining paint stain to remove more of the stain. Follow the same process as with white vinegar, changing cotton balls as needed so as not to transfer paint back onto the quilt.
