How to Get Rid of a Red Wine Stain on Light Carpet

A red wine spill at a social gathering puts a damper on the festivities and may result in a badly stained carpet. Conversely, discovering a dried wine stain the morning after hosting a party in your home is worse. Stains must be addressed as soon as possible to clean them completely. Wet stains and dried stains are cleaned differently. The cleaning materials are common household items and the time and effort requirement is minimal. When conducting a social affair, it is a good idea to have cleaning materials immediately available.

Instructions

  1. Wet Stains

    • 1

Pour salt, kitty litter or another absorbent material on the stain as soon as it occurs and leave it on the stain overnight.

    • 2

Vacuum the absorbent material from the carpet.

    • 3

Pour club soda over the stained area, gently agitate it with your fingers for two or three minutes and then blot it up with an absorbent towel.

    Dried Stains

    • 4

Mix a solution of 1 tsp. liquid detergent with a cup of mildly warm water.

    • 5

Blot the stain thoroughly with a clean cloth soaked in the solution. Do not use so much solution that it saturates the backing of the carpet.

    • 6

Mix one part vinegar to two parts water and blot the stain while gently rubbing it with your fingers.

    • 7

Repeat the process if necessary to remove all of the stain.

    • 8

Sponge the stain with clear water and use an absorbent towel to blot up the liquid.
