How to Get a Smoke Smell Out of a Chair

When you acquire a chair that reeks of smoke, the smell lingers in the air and can transfer to your clothes. The smoke smell could also be a result of a household fire or a smoker who visited your home. Regardless of the source, the smoke smell can become overwhelming and sometimes unbearable. Instead of throwing the chair away, you can remove the smoke smell from the fabric by deodorizing the upholstery.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the windows in the room where the chair is. Leave the windows open to allow the air to circulate.

    • 2

Sprinkle the chair with a light dusting of baking soda. Cover as much of the upholstery as possible and let it sit overnight for best results. Vacuum the baking soda off the chair the following day.

    • 3

Fill two to three shallows bowls with white vinegar. Place the bowls next to the chair to absorb the smoke odor. Discard the vinegar after two to three days.

    • 4

Apply a deodorizer to the chair that contains cyclodextrin. Spray the chair with the deodorizer to remove the smoke smell. Always read the instructions before you apply the deodorizer to prevent damage to the upholstery.

    • 5

Fill bowls with powdered activated charcoal and leave them out next to the chair. Activated charcoal absorbs odors effectively without the use of chemicals.
