How to Get Nail Polish Off a Wax Linoleum Floor

Painting your fingernails and toenails at the kitchen table saves money by eliminating trips to the manicurist. Unfortunately, one spilled nail polish bottle spells disaster for your waxed linoleum floors. If left untreated, the chemicals in nail polish will eventually seep into the floor, causing a permanent discoloration that is only remedied by replacement of the flooring. Use the proper chemicals and tools to safely and effectively remove the nail polish from your waxed linoleum floors.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak a cotton ball with nail polish remover that does not contain acetone. Test an inconspicuous area of the linoleum flooring with the polish remover to ensure it causes no damage. If no damage occurs, continue on to the next steps.

    • 2

Soak the corner of a washcloth with the nail polish remover. Lay the washcloth directly on the nail polish stain for 10 to 15 minutes. This allows the polish remover to penetrate the wax and lift it from the flooring.

    • 3

Remove the washcloth and examine the stain. If it is not removed, work the nail polish remover gently into the stain with a nylon scrub brush until it is gone.

Rinse the affected area with water and dry the floor with a towel. Cover the flooring with a fresh coat of linoleum wax according to the package directions. Allow the wax to remain on the linoleum for at least 24 hours before washing the floor.
