How to Clean Ranch Dressing From Couch Fabric

Oil-based stains, such as those caused by ranch dressing, are absorbed or repelled depending upon the type of fabric covering the couch. Becoming familiar with the couch's information booklet is necessary for home owners wishing to preserve its condition. Cleaning ranch dressing stains successfully requires following strict procedures. Blotting or tamping the stain, instead of scrubbing it, is repetitive and boring but essential to avoid stretching or ripping the fabric. Set aside enough time, have all cleaning supplies available and eliminate as many distractions as possible before beginning the project.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove excess ranch dressing from the couch by scraping it with the edge of a large spoon and scooping it up. Scrape carefully to avoid pushing the dressing into the couch fabric.

    • 2

Sprinkle the stained area liberally with table salt, cornstarch or other absorbent material. Leave the absorbent material on the stain for approximately 15 minutes. Use your fingers to occasionally and gently swirl the absorbent material until it absorbs as much oil as possible.

    • 3

Blot the stain with a paper towel moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Continue the blotting process by occasionally moving to a clean spot on the towel and refreshing that spot with isopropyl alcohol.

    • 4

Treat the stained area with spot remover containing Tetrachloroethene or perchloroethylene, available from retail stores, according to the instructions on the container.

    • 5

Add approximately one capful of mild shampoo to 1 cup of warm water and swirl it with your fingers until it is well mixed. Dampen a clean white cloth with the mixture and blot the stain until the cloth is soiled. Switch to another spot and continue until the cloth no longer picks up color.

    • 6

Blot the stained area thoroughly with clear water and a clean white cloth.

    • 7

Mix a solution of equal parts water and white vinegar in a cup. Dampen a clean, white cloth with the solution and gently blot the stain to remove ranch dressing and detergent residue.

    • 8

Allow the couch fabric to completely air-dry before using it.
