Removing Water Spots From a Wood Table

Condensation forming on the outside of a glass can cause a water ring on wooden tables. You can remove these water ring stains if they came from a one-time event. If the water stain came from leaving a water container in one area for several days or weeks, you may have to refinish the entire table. Try to remove the ring stain as soon as you can, as the longer it sits, the harder it will be to remove.

Instructions

  1. Iron Method

    • 1

Soak a terry washcloth in clear water and wring it out so it is very wet but isn’t dripping.

    • 2

Lay the cloth over the water ring stain.

    • 3

Iron the cloth on medium-low heat but be careful not to touch the iron to the wood surface.

    • 4

Remove the towel and look at the ring stain. The steam from the towel will help remove the ring stain. Let the wood dry and cool completely.

    • 5

Repeat the process if the ring stain is still visible.

    Paste Method

    • 6

      Dampen a cloth in water.

    • 7

Mix a quarter-size dollop of mayonnaise with ¼ cup cigarette ashes.

    • 8

Apply the mayonnaise mixture to the water ring with the damp cloth. Continue rubbing into the ring until it disappears. Wipe up the excess.

    • 9

Mix 1 tablespoon baking soda with 1 tablespoon toothpaste if the ring is still noticeable. Rub the paste into the ring until it is gone.

    • 10

Soak another cloth in clear water and wipe any residue off the table. Dry it immediately. Never let wood air dry as this can damage it over time.
