Removing Rust Stains From a Toilet With Vinegar

Hard water contains high concentrations of minerals such as magnesium, which can leave unsightly reddish rust stains behind. Hard water in the toilet bowl leaves particularly nasty-looking stains, making your toilet seem unclean even after you diligently scrub it. Though there are many commercial products available to remove such stains, there’s really no need to invest in them when simple household vinegar removes these types of stains just as effectively.

Instructions

    • 1

      Flush the toilet.

    • 2

Pour 1 cup of distilled white vinegar into the toilet and leave it overnight without flushing.

    • 3

Scrub the stains in the morning with a toilet brush to remove as much of the stain as possible.

    • 4

Shut off the water to the toilet if the stain persists.

    • 5

Flush the toilet again to remove as much water from the bowl as possible.

    • 6

Pour white vinegar into a spray bottle and use it to saturate the toilet bowl.

    • 7

Sprinkle borax over the dampened toilet bowl liberally.

    • 8

Allow the vinegar and borax to remain on the residual stains for 30 minutes to an hour. Spray more vinegar into the bowl every few minutes to keep it damp.

    • 9

Scrub the toilet bowl again with a toilet brush to remove the remaining stains.

    • 10

Repeat the process with the borax and vinegar until the stains disappear. Turn the water back on.
