How to Clean Aquarium Carbon Powder Out of Carpet

Aquarium carbon powder is a highly efficient and effective filtration medium that is used to keep aquariums clean. It is actually activated charcoal powder, a time-tested absorbent that is also used in first aid as an antidote for poisoning. If you spill aquarium carbon powder on your carpet, it will leave an unsightly black stain. However, you can very easily remove this stain using regular detergent or carpet cleaning solution. An alternative method uses baking soda or starch along with a solvent-based spot remover or cleaning fluid.

Instructions

  1. Detergent Method

    • 1

Mix 2 tablespoons of liquid dish-washing detergent with 2 cups of warm water in a bowl or mixing vessel with enough space for suds and that is convenient for dipping cloth. Alternately, follow the directions on a bottle of carpet shampoo for stain removal by hand.

    • 2

Saturate a clean, dry white cloth with the solution and wipe the stain as if you were using a sponge. Blot the treated area dry with another cloth until it absorbs the liquid.

    • 3

Repeat Step 2 as many times as necessary, usually about three or four times, until the stain disappears.

    • 4

Wet another clean cloth or a sponge with clean, cold water and wipe the area to remove detergent residue. Blot the area dry with a clean, dry cloth. Vacuum if necessary when the area is fully dry to restore the nap of your carpet.

    Solvent Method

    • 5

Ventilate the area well. Run an electric fan pointing away from you and toward a door or other opening in the room if you cannot open your windows.

    • 6

Sprinkle the stained area with baking soda, cornstarch or a carpet absorbent and freshener. Allow the powder to stand for at least an hour and then vacuum the affected area.

    • 7

Repeat Step 2 as many times as necessary, usually two or three times, until the stain is no longer visible.

    • 8

Wet another clean cloth or a sponge with clean, cold water and wipe the area to remove solvent residue. Blot the area dry with a clean, dry cloth. Vacuum if necessary when the area is fully dry to restore the nap of your carpet.
