Fill the pot or pan with warm water.

Add 2 teaspoons of cream of tartar for every quart of water.

Place the pot or pan on the stove and bring the water to a boil and reduce the heat to medium-high so the water can simmer.

Allow the water to simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.

Remove the pot or pan from the heat and allow it to cool off enough to touch.

Wash the pot or pan with warm soapy water. Apply a small amount of baking soda to the sponge to add additional abrasiveness to make scrubbing easier.
