How to Get Stains Out of a Bruce Prefinished Hardwood Floor

Bruce is a brand of prefinished hardwood floors. Because the finish is applied before installation, it does not cover the gap in between the floorboards. Thus, it is more susceptible to damage from water used in cleaning or stain removal. Remove stains as soon as you notice them because the longer you wait, the more time the stain will have to settle into the hardwood floor.

Instructions

  1. Removing Food, Hard Water, Grease Stains or Scuff Marks

    • 1

Soak a clean cloth in clear water and wring it out as much as possible. Never apply too much water to prefinished floors.

    • 2

Rub the cloth over the area to remove as much of the stain as you can. In some cases this will completely remove the stain and other times you’ll need to use an additional cleaner.

    • 3

Blot commercial hardwood floor cleaner directly onto the stain with a clean cloth until the stain is gone or as light as possible.

    • 4

Dab mineral spirits on the stains if you can still see them. Work from the edges of the stain toward the center and continue dabbing until the stain is gone.

    • 5

Rinse the area with a cloth dampened in clear water.

    Removing Gum and Candle Wax

    • 6

Fill a zip-top bag with ice.

    • 7

Place the ice over the gum or candle wax to harden it. This will make it brittle.

    • 8

Pry the gum or candle wax off the floor with the edge of a plastic credit card or utensil. Don’t use metal as this can scratch prefinished floors.

    • 9

Dampen a cloth with hardwood floor cleaner.

    • 10

Rub the cloth over the area to clean any residue. Rinse the area by rubbing it with a water-dampened cloth. Dry the prefinished floor completely.
