How to Remove Discoloration From a Brushed Stainless Steel Tea Kettle

Despite your best efforts, you might have discolorations on your brushed stainless steel tea kettle. If fingerprints and scorch marks mar the look of your stainless steel kettle, try to remove the discolorations with a few household items, elbow grease, and some patience. Stainless steel scratches easily so it is important to use non-abrasive materials when cleaning and treating your tea kettle. Once your kettle is back to its original luster, treat stains immediately to make removing them easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Soak a soft sponge in a mixture of hot water and dish detergent. Wring out the excess liquid and wipe the kettle with the damp sponge. It's OK to wipe both with and against the grain in this case, paying special attention to the areas with discoloration. Rinse the kettle with water and pat it dry with a soft towel. If the stains are not removed with the sponge and detergent mix, continue with step 2.

Dampen a microfiber cloth with undiluted white vinegar. Rub the discolored spots with the grain. Rinse with water and pat dry with a soft towel. For more persistent stains, continue to step 3.

Add 4 tablespoons of baking soda to 1 quart of warm water, and mix until the baking soda is completely dissolved. With a soft cloth, apply the mixture to the stain and wipe with the grain. Rinse the tea kettle and repeat if necessary.
