Removing Adhesive From Marble

Marble is a type of metamorphosed limestone. Due to its unique and attractive aesthetic and its durability, marble is used in a variety of high-quality building materials, including flooring and countertops. In any home environment exposed to traffic, however, these materials can easily attract debris. If you have accidentally stuck an adhesive, such as a sticker, glue or tape residue, to your marble surface, you need to carefully use the correct removal method to preserve and restore your marble surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove as much of the adhesive or adhesive residue as possible. You can use a razor blade or paint scraper to remove the adhesive, but be very careful to not scratch the marble surface.

    • 2

Wet a clean, soft cloth with acetone.

    • 3

Scrub the adhesive gently with the acetone rag until the adhesive loosens and you can wipe it away with the rag. If the adhesive leaves behind a stain on the marble, proceed to Step 4.

    • 4

Mix a poultice made by adding mineral spirits to diatomaceous earth or baking powder until the mixture reaches the consistency of peanut butter.

    • 5

Spread the poultice over the area where you removed the adhesive. The poultice should be about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick and should extend beyond the stain approximately one inch on all sides.

    • 6

Place plastic wrap over the poultice and tape down the edges of the plastic wrap to make sure that it is sealed. Leave it for 24 to 48 hours.

    • 7

Remove the plastic wrap and remove the poultice from the marble.

    • 8

Rinse the area with distilled water, then dry the marble completely with a clean, soft cloth.
