How to Get Stains Out of a Limestone Floor

Limestone makes an ideal flooring choice because it is readily available, durable and easy to maintain. It’s a sedimentary rock that is mainly composed of calcium carbonate, silica and fossilized seashells. The porosity and density of limestone varies, but the strongest types are generally used in construction and to create flooring. Liquids, dirt and debris absorb into the limestone’s pores, requiring effort to remove the stains without harming the stone’s surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a mixture of 1 cup talcum powder, 1/2 cup distilled water and 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide. Continue to add talcum powder until a paste consistency is achieved.

    • 2

Apply the poultice to the limestone stain with a soft cloth. Cover and protect the poultice with plastic wrap that is attached to the limestone with masking tape.

    • 3

Allow the poultice to remain for 24 to 48 hours. During this time the hydrogen peroxide penetrates the limestone, gently lifting the stain.

    • 4

Remove the plastic wrap and wipe away the poultice with a damp cloth.
