# Removing Rust From Brushed Stainless-Steel Surfaces
Brushed stainless steel has a visible grain that creates a matte surface. This, like any other stainless steel, can rust over time once the layer of protective surface wears off. Use mild cleaning solutions that will remove this rust without damaging the metal. Don’t use strong chemicals, such as bleach, because they will discolor the stainless steel, making the stain more visible. Remove rust as soon as you notice it to prevent it from spreading throughout the brushed stainless-steel surface.
Things You'll Need
- Scouring powder
- Plastic scrubbing pad
- White vinegar
- Towel

Wet the surface with water.

Sprinkle scouring powder over the rust stain.

Rub the scouring powder into the surface with a plastic scrubbing pad. Scrub in the direction of the stainless steel grain and work until the surface rust stain is gone.

Rinse the area with water and continue if the rust stain is still visible.

Dip the scrubbing pad in white vinegar. White vinegar is a mild acid that will counteract an alkaline stain. It is natural, nontoxic and food grade.

Scrub the pad over the brushed surface along the grain. Work until the stain is gone.

Rinse the surface with water and dry it completely.
