How to Get Rid of Odors Caused by Spoiled Milk

The strong odor of sour milk is difficult to eliminate. The smell is produced by bacteria in the milk that become fermented when milk is left out. Use one of several approaches for getting rid of this stench, each depending on what surface or item the sour milk odor is coming from. After applying the appropriate cleaning solution, you may need to wait 24 hours for the agent to set in and neutralize the smell.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove spoiled milk from a hard surface, using a warm rag. Scrape away dried milk from carpeting or upholstery, using a butter knife or razorblade. Remove dried milk from a dish or baby bottle by soaking in detergent and hot water.

    • 2

Mix enough water with the baking soda to form a paste and smooth it over soiled areas. Baking soda paste will work on upholstery, mattresses, carpeting, the refrigerator, inside a baby bottle or other container. Allow the paste to sit for six or seven hours, then vacuum up the dried paste.

    • 3

Soak soiled areas on clothing in white vinegar for 15 minutes. Launder the clothing on a gentle cycle and allow to air dry.
