How to Get Oil Pastels Out of Table Cloths

Tablecloths used for oil pastel projects often become accidentally marked with the oil-based stain, and require immediate attention to effectively remove the oil pastel entirely from the tablecloth fabric. The key to removing the stain entirely is by acting as soon as possible to clean the tablecloth, as oil pastel stains that are allowed to dry are impossible to clean. Common household products including oxygen bleach, car lubricant and dish washing liquid soap are all capable of lifting the stain from the tablecloth without damaging the color or texture of the tablecloth, and must be used as directed to preserve the tablecloth's fabric.

Instructions

    • 1

Place three to four paper towels on a hard, flat surface and place the stained tablecloth on top of the paper towels.

    • 2

Spray the oil pastel stain with the car part lubricant to saturate the stain. Flip the tablecloth over and lay it back onto the bed of paper towels.

    • 3

Spray the other side of the stained area with the car part lubricant, and massage 1 tablespoon of dish washing liquid into the stain.

    • 4

Fill your washer with hot water and pour 1 cup of the oxygen bleach into the washer. Place the tablecloth into the washer and set the rinse cycle to a warm temperature setting.

    • 5

Hang the tablecloth on your bathroom's shower curtain rod to air dry. Spray the stain with a laundry pre-treater spray if the stain remains, and wash the tablecloth in the hottest water acceptable for the fabric and laundry detergent. Air dry the tablecloth on the shower curtain rod to safely dry the tablecloth.
