How to Get Residue of Cement Glue off of Floor Peel-and-Stick Tile

Installing peel-and-stick tile sometimes requires the use of cement glue to ensure that the stick part of the mounting is secure. While the quick working glue will help keep the tile in place, it also may dry on your tile surface if spilled. If smeared, it can dry to a light haze. There is a solvent created exclusively for use with cement glue that will remove this residue.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the tile with a mix of mild liquid soap and warm water. Use a scrub brush to remove all traces of dirt that can conceal the cement residue. Rinse the soap off the tile with clean water and then wipe the tiles dry with a towel.

    • 2

Fill a small oil can with contact cement solvent. Lightly squirt the residue on the tile with the solvent and then wait five minutes for the solvent to penetrate the residue, loosening it.

    • 3

Scrape off the majority of the residue with the edge of a putty knife.

    • 4

Squirt the surface a second time and wait an additional five minutes. Wipe the remainder of the residue from the tile with a clean rag. Change the rags often to avoid spreading removed cement over fresh portions of the tile.

    • 5

Examine the surface for further traces of the cement residue. If any cement residue is found, then repeat the wiping process with the rags until you can no longer see traces of the residue.

    • 6

Wash the surface a second time with the warm soapy water, and wipe dry with a towel to make certain that you’ve removed all of the cement and solvent and that no cement will reform a new haze.
