How to Remove Rusty Chrome

Chrome is a soft, shiny metal commonly used on bicycles, cars and bathroom fixtures. When repeatedly exposed to moisture, chrome may develop unattractive rust spots that spread like a cancer when left ignored. Unfortunately, powdered cleansers and aggressive scrubbers can permanently scratch and mar chrome's finish. Remove the rust spots as soon as possible with gentle, nonabrasive cleaning products.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the chrome thoroughly with soapy water, using a soft sponge. This will remove surface dirt that can abrade the chrome. Rinse the chrome before proceeding.

    • 2

Scrunch a piece of aluminum foil into a ball if you aren’t using steel wool. Dip the wool or foil into chrome polish, lemon juice or white vinegar.

    • 3

Rub the lubricated foil or steel wool onto the rusty area, using gentle pressure. Add more polish, juice or vinegar as you work to keep the area lubricated.

    • 4

Rinse the chrome with plain water and dry it off with a soft cloth.
