How to Get Rid of Iron Stains on a Toilet

Iron stains appear in your toilet in the form of a red or brown film. They are primarily caused by a high iron content in the water. These stains are unsightly, and leave your toilet looking unclean. Scrubbing the toilet with toilet bowl cleaner often isn’t enough to remove tough iron stains. The inside of the tank may need a once over as well, because if there's iron in the bowl, it's also inside the tank. Take a more aggressive approach to get your toilet shining again.

Instructions

    • 1

Dip a cup into the toilet bowl to remove as much water as you can. Get the water line below the stains so the water doesn’t dilute the cleaning mixture.

    • 2

Mix 3 tablespoons of lemon juice with 1 tablespoon of borax powder. Stir it up well to make a paste.

    • 3

Spread the paste onto the iron stains. Let the paste sit for a few minutes.

    • 4

Scrub the toilet with a brush to remove the stains. Flush the toilet to rinse away the paste.

    • 5

Cut a lemon into quarters and sprinkle the toilet bowl with table salt if the stains remain. Use the lemon and salt to scrub the iron stains from the toilet. Flush the toilet to rinse.

    • 6

Mix equal parts cream of tartar, mild scouring powder and hydrogen peroxide if the stains are persistent. Spread the paste onto the iron spots with a rag and wait 30 minutes. Scrub with a toilet brush to remove the iron stains, then flush to rinse.
