How to Remove Spills From a Smooth Top Cooktop

      Turn off all the burners. Allow the smooth top to cool down completely before wiping up spills to prevent burning your hands. Dampen a washcloth with water and wipe up the spills quickly.

      Remove any lingering residue with hot, soapy water. Wipe the spill with a clean washcloth. Rinse the cooktop with clean water and dry the surface with a towel.

      Stir 4 tablespoons of baking soda into 1 quart of warm water to remove tough spills. Scrub on the cooktop with a nonabrasive sponge. Always rinse the baking soda solution off with clean water to prevent leaving any residue behind. Dry the cooktop off with a towel.

      Apply a commercial smooth cooktop cleaner to the stove top if the spill remains. Contact the stove manufacturer for a recommended product to use. Always read the instructions on the cleaner carefully before you apply it.
