Removing Burnt Oil From Cooking Pans

Burnt oil on a pan requires a bit of scrubbing, but is possible to remove with a few common household products. You can use a few different methods to remove burnt oil from cast iron and stainless steel pans, so make sure you identify the type of pan you have and follow the directions for your specific pan.

Things You'll Need

  • Oven mitts
  • Hot water
  • Coarse salt
  • Non-metal brush
  • Towel
  • Cooking oil
  • Baking soda
  • Foam eraser sponge
  • Dish soap

Instructions

  1. Cast Iron

      Place oven mitts on your hands.

      Fill the cast iron pan with hot, but not boiling, water. Add about 1/4 cup of course salt.

      Scrub the pan with a non-metal dish brush until the burnt oil is removed.

      Dry the pan with a towel and lightly coat the cooking surface with cooking oil to prevent rust.

    Stainless Steel

      Allow the pan to cool.

      Pour baking soda onto foam eraser sponge.

      Scrub the burnt oil with the sponge until the residue is removed.

      Wash the pan with dish soap and water and dry thoroughly.
