How to Get Scuff Marks Out of Distressed Leather Boots

While scuff marks are common on baseboards and walls, they are almost always a problem for well-used leather shoes. Scuff marks develop when the leather comes into contact with another surface. The friction causes the surface of the other object to rub off on the leather shoe. You can remove these scuff marks from even very distressed leather shoes with a simple cleaning process that uses products you may already have in your home.

Instructions

  1. Unfinished Leather

    • 1

Rub an eraser over the scuff mark until it is gone. Use a white eraser so you don’t impart a color on the shoe.

    • 2

Boil a pot of water on a stove.

    • 3

Hold the leather shoe above the pot to let the steam envelop the leather shoe. Hold it there for a minute.

    • 4

Brush the shoe with a suede brush. Pay special attention to the scuff mark and brush until it is gone. Let the shoe dry completely.

    Finished Leather

    • 5

Rub a white eraser over the scuff mark. Work until the stain is gone or until you can’t remove any more of it.

    • 6

Mix ½ cup white vinegar with 1 cup linseed oil. White vinegar will help remove the stain while the linseed oil will condition the leather.

    • 7

Dip a cloth into the solution and rub it over the scuff mark until it is completely gone.

    • 8

Buff the area dry with another cloth.
