How to Get Marker Out of a Cushion

You can always soak up a spilled drink or carefully blot up some spilled food from your couch, but you can’t simply wipe away a marker stain. Still, working to clean the stain as soon as possible will help make the stain easier to remove, as the longer it sits on your upholstery, the more it will soak into the cushion and settle there. Be careful to test the cleaning solutions on a small area of the cushion first to make sure they won't damage it.

Instructions

    • 1

Mix 1 tablespoon liquid dish soap with 1 tablespoon white vinegar and 2 cups cold water.

    • 2

Blot the solution directly on the stain with a clean white cloth. Use a white cloth so you can determine if the solution is working and when it stops transferring the stain from the cushion.

    • 3

Let the solution sit on the cushion for 30 minutes and continue blotting.

    • 4

Press a cloth soaked in cold water over the area.

    • 5

Dab rubbing alcohol directly on the stain if you can still see it. Let it sit for five minutes before blotting the rest of the stain off.

    • 6

Mix 1 teaspoon liquid dish soap with 2 cups of cold water and 1 tablespoon of ammonia if you can still see the stain.

    • 7

Blot the solution onto the stain until it is completely saturated. Let it sit for 30 minutes, blotting more solution onto the area every five minutes.

    • 8

Blot the area with a dry-cleaning solution if the stain is still there.

    • 9

Press a clean wet cloth over the area until you soak up the rest of the cleaning solution.
