How Do I Get Hairspray Off My Kitchen Tile?

Hairspray can leave a sticky film behind on any surfaces it happens to land on. Because the particles in the spray are propelled through the air in a fine mist, hairspray may end up on surfaces that you didn't intend for it to do. Over time, repeated use of hairspray in one area can leave behind a sticky mess that doesn't respond to the usual cleaning techniques. Dried hairspray can be removed from any surface, however, provided that a strong solvent is used.

Things You'll Need

  • Ammonia or denatured alcohol
  • Nylon scrubbing pad

Instructions

    • 1

Pour a small amount of ammonia or denatured alcohol either directly onto the hairspray or onto a nylon scrubbing pad for wall application.

    • 2

Rub the nylon scrubbing pad through the ammonia or denatured alcohol on the hairspray vigorously. Use a circular motion, working in small areas while the ammonia or alcohol soaks the rest.

    • 3

Rinse the area well with plain water and repeat if necessary until the hairspray is gone. Depending on the level of buildup, this may take several applications. Dry the tile between cleanings to test for remaining sticky areas or missed spots.
