How to Clean Placemats with Oil on Them

Placemats are used to protect the table’s surface from food and beverage spills, while adding a colorful, decorative touch to kitchen and dinning rooms. Oil-based food products, such as cooking oils and salad oils, can stain leaving strong odors in the placemat's fabric. Elimination of such stains requires the use of common household items and cleaners, which cut through oil to remove the stain.

Instructions

    • 1

Squirt 2 to 4 drops of dish soap into a plastic cup filled with warm water. Pour the cup slowly over the oil-stained placement.

    • 2

Scrub the soapy stain with a toothbrush and let the stain sit for five to 10 minutes.

    • 3

Blot the newly scrubbed stain with a wet towel followed by a dry towel. If the oil does not dissipate, apply an enzyme stain remover directly on the oil stain. Let stand for 20 to 30 minutes and blot with wet and dry towels.
