How to Get Smoke Stains Out of a Leather Sofa

Smoke, whether from cigarettes or a fire in the fireplace, leaves stains and odor as it wafts through the air. Porous surfaces are particularly susceptible to smoke stains, and this includes your leather sofa. When left unattended, smoke-stain buildup causes discoloration and a stale stench that makes your sofa less than inviting. You can get smoke stains out of your leather sofa, but you must use supplies and cleaning methods safe for leather surfaces.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 1 gallon of warm water into a bucket. Add 2 caps full of saddle soap and 1/2 cup of white vinegar to help cut the grease residue and odor from smoke.

    • 2
White vinegar naturally deodorizes smoke-stained leather.

Soak a sponge with the soap and vinegar solution. Wring out the sponge until it's merely damp.

    • 3

Wash the surface of your leather sofa to remove the smoke stains. Rinse the sponge frequently throughout the cleaning progress. Make a new batch of cleansing solution when the water becomes dirty-looking.

    • 4

Wipe the surface of your leather sofa with a damp cloth to rinse it. Dry the leather with another cloth.

    • 5

Combine 1 tablespoon of white vinegar, 2 tablespoons of boiled linseed oil and two drops of vanilla essential oil in a bowl. Stir the solution with a spoon.

    • 6

Apply a quarter-sized amount of the homemade leather moisturizer and freshener to a clean cloth. Buff the leather with the moisturizer and allow it to soak into the surface. Rub excess moisturizer off with a dry cloth.
